Our Roles as Rangers

We work as volunteer rangers for Sustrans, the Sustainable Transport Charity.  Our aims are detailed below:

  • To maintain the parts of the National Cycle Network (NCN) that we have been designated to allow for safe, trouble-free cycling.
  • To ensure that the signage is adequate on the National Cycle Network.
  • To help raise awareness of Sustrans through local festivals, the media and whilst out and about.
  • To embrace other Sustrans priojects aside from the National Cycle Network.
  • To work with local communities in order to promote cycling in the local area with a view to increasing the number of people cycling.
  • To liaise with councils and other organisations that have an effect on the cycling infrastructure.
  • With the above, help to identify new routes.
  • To attend workdays to improve routes.
  • Where possible, to fund-raise for Sustrans.
Local National Cycle Network Routes:

Currently we have 1 National Cycle Network route running through the Swadlincote area.  NCN63 runs from Burton-on-Trent to Wisbech in Cambridgeshire.  Our section is from Church Gresley through to Measham, though we also monitor the route all of the way into Burton.

A more full description of the route can be found on Wikipedia.

Recent local achievements have included signing of the route from Swadlincote to Church Gresley, including through Maurice Lea Park which gives another small section of off road cycling.

We have also improved signage from Union Street in Burton through to Shobnall to give the route a more definitive ending to meet NCN Route 54.

Raising Awareness

Our publicity stands have given us a great opportunity to spread the word about Sustrans and have also been good to inform people about the local cycle routes and hand out many leaflets.  We have worked on publicity stands in the following events:

  • South Derbyshire Festival of Leisure (Maurice Lea Park - Church Gresley)
  • Overseal Gala
  • Moira Canal Festival
  • Skyride - Leicester
We have also displayed at the now defunct Healthier South Derbyshire Day at the Green Bank Leisure Centre.

The following pictures are at Overseal Gala 2012 before the crowds arrived:

The following video clip was taken during Skyride 2011 and includes a contribution from an unsuspecting Swadlincote Ranger who in all honesty thought he was just posing for a photo....

Liaison with other Organisations

Through the quarterly Derbyshire Greenways meetings, we liaise with the following organisations:

  • Derbyshire County Council
  • South Derbyshire District Council
  • The National Forest Company
  • Rosliston Forestry Centre
  • The Forestry Commission
  • Groundworks, Canal & Rivers Trust (through meetings).
  • Our fellow rangers from the Derby section.
Workdays

The photos below show some work we did last year on a section of NCN 52 near Whitwick.  The path had become a little muddy in places and needed widening.  We attended on bike so had a useful 40 mile ride and met up with our Leicestershire colleagues.  All in all it was a very rewarding experience.
